ONE STRIKE I DO SUPPORT

Re: Hydro Ottawa strike: Nine days in strike, no movement on resuming negotiations, online edition, July 7

I generally don’t support strikes. All they usually seem to demand is more and more money, for less and less work and with little accountability. To hell with the taxpayer who has to foot the bill.

But I do support, whole heartedly, the strike of Hydro Ottawa. These people go above and beyond. Just recall how hard they work and the long hours they work, often in very difficult and dangerous weather emergencies. All for the safety and benefit of you, the consumer.

These men and women should not have to worry about health and safety issues. Ignoring safety violations leads to major accidents, which no one wants. We want to ensure that everyone goes home to their families at day’s end.

They should have the best safety and insurance benefits available. Wages, benefits, premiums and allowances should be top notch. These are highly qualified people who never fail to show up when they are called, often when the rest of us are hiding in our basements.

Stay strong strikers. I am sure that I am not the only person in Ottawa who totally supports you.

GROCERY REBATE GIMMICK

Re: LILLEY: Trudeau’s grocery rebate proof that his government is failing, online edition, July 5

Truer words were never spoken, and this latest gimmick by Trudeau is meant to cause the 11 million who get food vouchers to forget why food is so high and hopefully buy their votes next election. We are currently paying high prices for food, gasoline, heating our homes and all other goods transported all because of Trudeau’s obsession with his green dream.

Trudeau’s reckless, ideologically driven spending has driven up inflation and with it cost of everything we buy. Trudeau has already spent more than $100 billion fighting climate change with few positive results. At the same time, his war on fossil fuels and his carbon taxes are the main causes for the high costs of food.

Not only do these unusual handouts smack of socialism, picking winners and losers, it is a Band-Aid fix to a humongous problem. Trudeau’s radical policies and reckless spending will keep driving up the cost of living.

(Oh and by the way, the Bank of Canada just raised interest rates again.)
