Re: GUNTER: The persecution of Tamara Lich and the gross overreaction to the convoy, column, online edition, May 21

The heavy-handed treatment of Tamara Lich and brutal put down of the “Freedom Convoy” has left a black mark on our country. Imagine having Ms. Lich appear for her bail hearings in leg irons, usually reserved for the most dangerous terrorists.

Justin Trudeau started things going downhill by labelling the “Freedom Convoy” as a small fringe group of racists, homophobes, insurrectionists, Nazis, etc., to demean and dehumanize them. His cowardly failure to meet with the convoy, instead invoking the Emergencies Act to have the police put down what had been a peaceful protest, brought condemnation from around the world.

And then the overzealous attacks continued, as Ms. Lich risked having her bail revoked (before a judge ruled that she would not be sent back to jail), for being granted a reward for her fighting for freedom. Canada is becoming unrecognizable as Trudeau continues running roughshod over our freedoms while using the power of the state to punish his opposition. We deserve better than this.

POOR TREATMENT

Re: Grits delusional over Freedom Convoy, column, May 22

I agree with the article writer, Lorne Gunter. The way the federal government has been treating Tamara Lich, you’d think she had murdered at least a dozen people! In fact, murderers have been better treated.

WASTE OF TIME, MONEY

The Crown’s recent attempt to jail Ms. Lich can only be categorized as overkill. What a waste of time and money. What a criminal she must be for agreeing to accept an award for her leadership during the truckers’ “Freedom Convoy.” No wonder this country is going to hell when freedom fighters are being put in jail instead of spending time pursuing and jailing real criminals. Examples like this mean Canada is becoming more like a communist state, attacking individuals whose ideas the government does not agree with.

PADDING HIS RESUMÉ

Re: Judge in Tamara Lich bail review decides not to send her back to jail, upholds social media ban, online edition, May 25

The judge correctly ruled on Tamara Lich’s bail review, letting her remain free. The Crown attorney was completely out of line with an almost vendetta-like attack on the former convoy leader. What exactly has been accomplished by throwing Lich back behind bars? It appears that this Crown attorney was out for publicity to try to pad his resumé.

BEWARE POLITIPOX

I think we’re finally on the down slope with the COVID virus and it looks like monkeypox is really not that big a deal. The next plague is on the horizon and it could be the worst of all of them. I’m calling it politipox! It manifests itself in several ways. People, detached from reality, will be asking for your vote ad nauseam. They’re adept at telling you who is responsible for your lot in life. They promise to fix it by promising all kinds of wonderful things, all the while not mentioning how they’ll pay for it. By my calculations, job creation is the new buzzword. How does an estimated 20,000 new jobs sound? That’s only nurses and teachers!

Don’t despair. Politipox shouldn’t last much longer. Strangely enough, there are no lasting effects and will it disappear in early June.
