BULLIED FOR VOTES

The 2.2 million licensed firearms owners are the only group in Canada that has repeatedly been singled out by the federal government to be harassed, discriminated against and bullied in order to get votes.

We have had gun control forced on us for more than 40 years. Gun control legislation is passed to get the people to think that these measures are going to stop gun violence on the streets. NOT!!!!!! Forty years of tighter and tighter gun control have had zero effect on gun crimes. A criminal can still buy, sell or trade an illegal handgun on the street because neither the government nor the RCMP have any control over illegal firearms.

I am licensed by the federal government to go to a local gun shop and purchase a handgun. The store operator calls the RCMP and checks to make sure my licence is valid. The RCMP, in turn, takes the make, model and serial number of that firearm and registers it in my name. I can’t take that firearm home until the RCMP has completed the transfer. When it’s completed, I am notified and given an Authorization to Transport number, which allows me to transport that firearm from the gun shop to my home.

A criminal meets someone on the street, hands over cash and walks away with an unregistered illegal handgun.

What the government is doing to us is the same as confiscating your motor vehicle because there are too many drunk drivers out there. We aren’t the problem.

DAVID PHILLIPS

LIVELY

(Canada has less gun violence than the U.S. and stricter laws: These two things are related.)

CLOSED FOR SPOKES

The ridiculous decision by the all-powerful National Capital Commission to close the Aviation Parkway on both Saturdays and Sundays is totally unnecessary. This city has endless bikeway paths; the parkway was made for vehicles. People like to go for drives (albeit short ones these days), and forcing them to use alternative routes is extremely unfair.

Now it is everything for the spokes folks, many all decked out in their Tour de France outfits (these are usually the ones who drive the expensive bikes, but won’t spend 10 bucks on a bell). To hell with those who want to just take the family for a ride.

STEPHEN FLANAGAN

OTTAWA

(It’s the outfits that should be outlawed.)

ROYAL FAILURE

How wonderful was it to witness the pageantry and celebrations over four days honouring our Queen? Too bad our federal government didn’t see it that way. In the past, the Government of Canada issued special medals for the silver, gold and diamond Jubilees. This time? Bupkis. I truly am ashamed of our post-nation state leader, Justine Trudeau. I know he gets a lot of the tough decisions wrong, but this one should have been a slam-dunk layup.

What an insult to Her Majesty, Canadians and anyone who believes in true duty and service. I would say that he may feel some shame over this, but I read that narcissists have trouble feeling empathy.

R. MERCER

(Shame? Surely you jest.)
