Water rescue crews had a busy long weekend on the fast-flowing Deschênes Rapids after they pulled a stranded kayaker to shore on Saturday evening, then rescued three people whose boat had flipped over in the choppy waters on Sunday.
Ottawa Fire Services officials said they were alerted by Ottawa police on Sunday to a boat that had flipped over with three people on board.
One boater was found by the Gatineau Fire Water Rescue team “hanging on to a paddle board” by the rapids, according to a news release Sunday afternoon.
”The other two boaters were found by Ottawa Fire Water Rescue teams in the water holding onto a rock. All boaters were safely returned to shore.”
Fire rescue crews from both sides of the Ottawa River pulled a kayaker safely to shore on Saturday evening after the boater had been reported missing in the same stretch of the river at the Deschênes Rapids, near Britannia Bay.
Officials said they received a 911 call around 5 p.m. Saturday reporting two kayakers that were seen entering the rapids. Only one kayaker was seen emerging from the choppy waters.
Water rescue crews from Ottawa and Gatineau each launched boats to search for the missing kayaker. The kayaker was eventually spotted with binoculars and was brought safely to shore.
