Sunday is last day for lifeguards, water tests at city beaches

Swim at your own risk.

It may feel like summer has just began in earnest, but lifeguards and public health water testers will wrap up their season at city beaches Sunday.

Lifeguards are on-duty and Ottawa Public Health tests water daily from June 17 to Aug. 27 at Petrie Island, Mooney’s Bay, Westboro and Britannia beaches.

As of Friday, Mooney’s Bay, Brittania and Westboro were cleared for safe swimming, while Petrie Island’s East Bay and river beaches were red-flagged.

No-swim advisories are issued if bacteria levels are over 200 E. coli per 100mL of water tested for one day or over 100 E. coli per 100mL on two or more consecutive days because swimmers risk skin, ear, throat or even gastro-intestinal illnesses.
