Carleton women's team after hoops magic, too

While it was originally donated by the Students' Council of McGill University in 1922, the Bronze Baby Trophy has only been presented to the Canadian university women's basketball champions since 1972.

According to the U Sports organization, previously known as Canadian Interuniversity Sport and before that the Canadian Interuniversity Athletics Union, the trophy figure is a replica of a statue that was on the grounds of Dunfermline College of Physical Education in Scotland and is a copy of a trophy competed for by the High Schools of Dundee. Winners from 1923 until 1971 are recorded on the old base of the statue at the McGill campus in Montreal.

This year's eight-team tournament will take place in Victoria, with games scheduled from Thursday through Sunday.

The Carleton Ravens have been seeded No. 1 after capturing their first Ontario University Athletics conference crown last Saturday night in Kingston. This year marks the Ravens' third appearance at nationals, but they come into it with a combined 0-4 record in games played in 2011 (at Windsor) and 2013 (Regina).

Sixth of the eight competing schools this year have never won a Canadian title previously. The Victoria Vikes — in this year's competition as host squad — have nine, and the Regina Cougars have one.
