Melnyk deserves better

Re: Ottawa casino

Why should we be surprised to see the Ottawa puppet once again dance to his provincial masters' tune? Why are a few horse owners in a sport that's on its last legs calling the shots regarding the location of a casino on the Ottawa side of the river?

Sens players regularly "give back" to the community. Does the horse racing community operate a foundation raising money for various charities in the city? How many of these horse people live in the city and pay property taxes or do they travel from community to community where harness racing tracks are located, paying property tax somewhere else?

Eugene Melnyk is one of the most generous businessmen to hit Ottawa in a long time, and he deserves a better hand than the one he was dealt by Mayor Jim and council. In the long run it's the residential taxpayer who'll take a bath as a result of council's kowtowing to the provincial Liberal government's interests.

A casino in the back of beyond, located on a road that is in disrepair and can barely handle commuter traffic, in a setting that is badly out of date, offering no glitz and glamour will not be successful. Chalk up another failure to Mayor Jim's penchant for sole sourcing.

Harb screwed us

Re: Mac Harb quite Senate, Aug 27.

Now that Mac is out of work, perhaps he could apply at Harvard and work as an assistant for Dalton in a whole new course titled "how to screw over the average taxpayer".

They would make a great pair.

Throw in Wallin and Duffy too

Stop the threats

I had to laugh when I saw the Senator's absentee owner trying to threaten the citizens of Ottawa. Every owner of that team has tried to make money off the original bad decision to build the arena out in Kanata. That location alienated Gatineau and most of Ottawa, so don't come crying because you got stuck with a bad arena location.

I can't think of a worse location for a casino than next to the Canadian Tire Centre for Ottawans, tourists etc. Stop threatening us, we always have the Habs and that team from Toronto.

It's his right. He feels shut out of the process

He's no Nixon

In Tuesday's Sun a letter writer was comparing Nixon, Trudeau and Harper....and got it only half right. Nixon lied, Trudeau tells the truth and Harper doesn't know the difference!

Still, imagine being compared to Nixon

No pensions

Re: 'Under fire on expenses, Senator quits, pays back $230Gs,' Aug. 27.

So Harb is retiring from the Senate over questionable expense claims. With a pension of $122,989, I imagine he's not too broken up over it.

If found guilty perhaps Harb, Brazeau, Duffy, and Wallin should forfeit their pensions as well.

What a waste they are
