Winning feeling just gets better for top women at Ottawa Sun Scramble

Article content

Winning never gets old for Lise Jubinville and Brenda Pilon.

Another new set of contenders pushed the five-time champs to the limit in the Ladies Open Division of the Ottawa Sun Scramble during Championship Sunday at Eagle Creek.

This time, it was shotmaking sisters -- Morgan and Erin McHardy -- whose 7-under 65 took the five-time Sun Scramble champs to a second playoff hole before getting knocked off. The teams had finished regulation in 11-under. The third-place finishers, June Staton and Kathy Keely, were eight shots off the pace.

A brilliant eagle on the 18th hole gave the McHardy's plenty of momentum. Pilon and Jubinville, "Frick and Frack," put up seven birdies on the afternoon.

"This keeps getting better," said Jubinville.

"We're getting older, uh, wiser ... and the competition is getting better," said Pilon. "We kept each other on our toes all day."

"We know they're amazing players," said Erin. "We had a plan. I was just trying to hit safe shots. We hit some pretty crazy shots out there."

The sisters have been practising the scramble format for a few weeks.

"It was a lot of fun," said Morgan. "They would make a putt and we would think we have to make our putt, too."

SUPER SENIORS

Graham Gunn and Stan Hogan won the seniors division with an 18-under for a three-shot win over Perry Freda and Randy Blondin. "It was not going well at the start," said Gunn, who joked: "We had to put the paddles on Stan and get him resuscitated. He made a bunch of putts." The duo birdied 2,4, 5, 7 and 9 after starting on the back nine and getting birdies on 14 and 18. "Graham started looking around and I knew he was looking for another partner," said Hogan with a laugh. "We just kept plodding along," said Gunn. "You can't give up. All of a sudden, the ball can go in from anywhere and the fuse is lit."

MEN'S A CHAMPS

Jeff Gordon and Bill Arvanitis shot a 7-under 65 to win the GolfWorks A championship -- their 12-under gave them a two-shot win over Chris Kavanaugh and Tyler Phillips.

B CHAMPS

The Tooth Fairy and Chill (Slammer Tour nicknames) are champs. Sharon Windsor and Cheryl Hill won the Ladies B Division.

"We didn't shoot horrible, but we didn't think it was enough to win," said Hill.

As it turns out, a four-foot birdie putt on the last hole decided it, putting them at 2-over, good for a one-shot victory over Erin McLean and Terry-Jane Hoy.

A double-bogey on the 13th could have been a killer, but the duo bounced back.

"Right before we teed off, we said this championship is going to be won on the greens," said Hill. "It's not drive for show, it's putt for dough."

JUNIOR CHAMPS

Matthew Acton and Brad Musclow, who missed the cut in last year's junior event, could afford to play conservatively this time. The dynamic duo shot an incredible 14-under in the opening round at eQuinelle. They coasted home Sunday at Eagle Creek, shooting a 3-under 69 to win by seven strokes over Chris McClure and Jonah O'Conner. "Our shots into the green weren't as close today," said Musclow. "We weren't giving ourselves chances at birdies."

WHAT A TEAM EFFORT

Executive golf president Jamie Ryan and his group should take a bow for the awesomeness of the tournament. "I'm very proud of my team," said Ryan. "It's a very satisfying feeling to have so many golfers of all skill level come out and experience good competition at such great courses.
