Movie nights proposed at Rink of Dreams

At least one politician is trying to bring some life to City Hall’s slab of concrete, otherwise known as the Rink of Dreams.

Knoxdale-Merivale Coun. Keith Egli says he wants management to explore the feasibility of having movie nights on the hard surface.

“I will be meeting with staff next week to discuss the possibilities for next year,” Egli said. “It seems to me that it should be a relatively inexpensive, uncomplicated and family-friendly idea.”

The concrete pad has largely sat empty during the summer, although the city says there are roughly 35 bookings for Festival Plaza between the spring and fall. The National Capital Craft Beer Festival is setting up this weekend.

The city paid $250,000 to help build the $2.1-million refrigerated rink, which opened last winter. The Ottawa Senators Foundation paid the rest of the bill.

Animating the concrete pad in the summer is the city’s next challenge. When it’s not being used for an event, the city covers the pad with picnic tables.

Egli there could be ways to raise money to cover any extra costs associated with family movie nights.

“A sponsor, of course, would be needed but it just seems like a feel-good summer activity as long as the weather cooperates,” Egli said.
