Ex-treasurer faces theft, fraud charge

NORTH STORMONT – The former treasurer of North Stormont Township has been charged in relation to missing money from the Township’s funds.

The SD&G OPP’s crime unit arrested Monique Lajeunesse, 55, June 6.

Mayor Dennis Fife had announced Dec. 14 that financial records showed discrepancies, and that a “substantial” amount of money was missing. The OPP was called in at that time to investigate.

The missing funds had been discovered in the fall when auditors were called in to review inconsistencies in the accounting system.

Fife remained hush over the amount of the money that was missing, saying “there is not a final number,” however when asked if the funds would be recovered, he said “we’re insured.”

Lajeunesse, from Cornwall, was charged with theft over $5,000, breach of trust, fraud over $5,000 and false statement in writing.

She was released to appear in Cornwall court July 3.

The township, meanwhile, is working towards hiring a new treasurer, with clerk Karen McPherson having filled the duties temporarily. Fife said they have several candidates to choose from.
