Toddler burned in kitchen mishap

A two-year-old boy was rushed to hospital with second-degree burns to his back after a kettle filled with boiling water fell on him at home Monday morning.

The boy is listed in serious condition.

“This was a particularly bad one,” said paramedic spokesman J.P. Trottier.

“Certainly not something you see too often, thankfully.”

Your own kitchen can be a dangerous place for children, said Trottier.

“We don’t know if he pulled on the wire,” he said.

“They’re very curious at that age...that’s in their nature.”

Paramedics are offering parents these important kitchen safety tips:

• Use rear stove elements as much as possible, keeping hot pots far from your child’s reach

• Keep stools and chairs away from counter tops and the stove

• Electrical cords from kitchen appliances should be tied up and placed as far as possible from your child’s reach

• To avoid painful burns, set water tank temperature at no more than 49 C

• Teach your child that the stove is a “hot spot”

In addition, the bathroom can also be a hazardous place.

Trottier said paramedics sometimes see children younger than two who get burned in the bathtub.

“They play with the taps,” he said.

“They like playing with shiny things.”

Paramedics are encouraging parents, grandparents, guardians, and caregivers to learn first aid and CPR.
