The citys roads maintenance branch was snowed over with calls in the first three months of 2012.

First quarter statistics compiled by the city show there were 14,514 calls for service through the 311 phone line between January and March.

Thats nearly 2,500 more calls than the same period in 2011.

The city chalks it up to significant snow events in the first part of the year. There was a high number of calls related to slippery and icy conditions because of rotating freeze-thaw cycles, according to the city.

Calls just for sidewalk conditions increased 32% in the first quarter of 2012, compared to the same period in 2011.

The last three months of 2011 only had 5,843 calls for roads, likely because of an unseasonable mild end to the year, the city says.

The top service request in the first part of 2012 was for bylaw services, which is typical.

The top five requests are usually, in order, bylaw, roads, garbage, traffic and water/sewer.

Garbage calls through the 311 service also spiked in the first quarter of 2012.

There were 14,493 calls, compared to 10,734 during the same period in 2011.

Of the top five categories, only water/sewer experienced a decrease in calls in the first quarter of 2012 compared to the first quarter of 2011.
