You could win in the We All Win Lottery

Article content

It’s all about the design details when it comes to the showhome cottage in the We All Win Lottery.

Details in the ceiling, details in the kitchen and details in the overall plan of the Madawaska, a modular home/ cottage built by Guildcrest Homes. Its layout may be simple in concept, but there are so many small enhancements that they add up to one great big finish.

The showhome cottage gives you an idea of what you could get should you end up as the second grand prize winner in the We All Win Lottery, formerly called the Ottawa Hospital & CHEO Lottery. The proceeds from this annual lottery will still raise funds for these two hospitals which are the area’s two largest health care providers. The lottery was launched on March 19 and saw the structure of the lottery change somewhat to include a first grand prize of $1.5 million in cash and a second grand prize worth $340,000. The second prize is called the Guildcrest Homes Pick Your Perfect Home Package. The package includes a $250,000 gift certificate from Guildcrest Homes along with $50,000 in cash, a $25,000 gift certificate from La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries, $10,000 in appliances from Corbeil and a $5,000 Future Shop gift card. Or there’s an option to simply take $250,000 in cash instead.

So as the second prize winner you could select the Guildcrest modular home/cottage that suits your needs. They have many designs to choose from but have erected the Madawaska as the lottery showhome and it is now open for viewing.

The Madawaska is an 1,879-square-foot, two-storey modular home/cottage. This is the fist time lottery organizers have gone with a two-storey version having opted for bungalow cottages the last four years.

The exterior of the Madawaska is done in vertical board and batten in a soft yellow and is complemented by brown vinyl cedar shakes.

Inside, the pine ceiling in the two-storey livingroom and above the loft level is striking and that’s really where the creativity of this design starts to shine.

Dream kitchen

But the hidden gems of this home are really located in the kitchen. The kitchen is decked out in so many built-in elements designed to make life easy and keep things organized. The large island is a treasure trove in itself. Not only does it have a wine rack built into the end, its drawers have been turned into an organizer’s dream.

Two of the top drawers are lined with organizing trays. One is set up for utensils and cutlery with a space for spices running down the middle. The other one has a wood tray with slots designed to hold knives. Below the first one are two deep pots and pans drawers. And one of the pots and pans drawers is set up with a moveable peg system designed to hold your pots in place and keep things tidy. And to make a simple pots and pans drawer even more upscale, they’ve added glass sides to the drawer. Under the knife drawer you’ll find a pull-out recycling centre for all the kitchen recyclables.

Moving away from the island, there are other design goodies still to be found in the kitchen. There’s an appliance garage with hinged, hydraulic lift door placed at one end of the counter. There’s also a lazy susan in the other corner and while that’s not so special, the fact that its door also retracts into the cupboard is unique.

With two colours of cabinetry and glass doors, the kitchen is modern and efficient.

The main floor of the Madawaska sports an open concept. The side door takes you out to the screened, cedar porch which measures 15’2”x11’4”. It has both front and back entrances. A vinyl floor that looks like slate finishes this space. The master bedroom is at the other end on this main floor. There’s also the main bathroom with walk-in shower.

The second level has been kept completely open for purposes of the display cottage. It overlooks the livingroom and the walls are sporting pictures of various Guildcrest homes/cottages that you could choose should you become the second grand prize winner. The original design for the Madawaska’s second level included two bedrooms, a bathroom and a small sitting area.

The showhome cottage is on display in the parking lot of the La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries at the corner of Hunt Club and Merivale roads in the west end.

The showhome cottage is open for viewing Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. and weekends from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
