Ottawa Air Canada flights delayed, cancelled

Air Canada won’t confirm that series of flights delayed or cancelled Saturday, has anything to with a union protest.

Four Air Canada flights arriving in Ottawa were cancelled as well as three other departures.

At Montreal’s Pierre Elliott Trudeau airport, flight schedules show at least 30 planes were delayed along with numerous cancellations.

The interruptions could cause delays for families trying to return home from March break vacations.

Air Canada wouldn’t comment on the cancellations but said they’re dealing with “a number of operational challenges, including weather.”

Heavy fog descended upon much of Ottawa Saturday, delaying flights across the board.

“However, the vast majority of Air Canada employees are working hard to get our customers to destination safely,” said Peter Fitzpatrick, a spokesperson for the airline.

Some media outlets are reporting pilots are calling in sick complaining of stress and fatigue in response to the government’s back-to-work legislation.

The legislation passed through the Senate on Thursday, preventing Air Canada workers from striking and sending them to binding arbitration to negotiate their final contract with the airline.

Bill C-33 affects two unions in dispute with Air Canada, one involving about 8,600 mechanics, ground workers and baggage handlers and the other 3,000 pilots.

The most recent push to arbitration is the federal government’s third attempt to put a stop to labour action in just nine months.
