Traffic circle coming to Kanata South

Article content

Kanata South is on the road to getting a new $1.2-million roundabout.

The city's planning committee Tuesday approved moving the project ahead of schedule because other construction work will be done this year in the area of Bridgestone, Stonehaven and Steeple Chase drives. The idea is to avoid two separate construction projects in the same area at different times.

Council will be asked to back the project Wednesday. Kanata South Coun. Allan Hubley supports it.

Urbandale Corp., an area developer, has agreed to front the city money for the roundabout construction at the intersection. The city would pay the company back in 2013 and 2014, the years the municipality expected to fund the roundabout.

So-called "front-ending agreements" are usually requested by developers who want certain capital projects complete before the city is ready to commit the funds. The city then pays the developers back for the work at a later date. In this case, the city approached the developer about the arrangement.

The city continues to build roundabouts across the city. A policy approved by council in 2007 requires the city to consider installing roundabouts at intersections that require new traffic signals.

The intersection of Bridgestone, Stonehaven and Steeple Chase drives currently has an all-way stop that is failing because of high traffic volumes.
